Sprayberry's BBQ - Newnan, GA
Sprayberry's just has that....je ne sais quoi...It reminds me of my childhood and listening to the Dawgs on the radio. This restaurant just feels right.
As I walk through the doors, I can almost hear Lewis Grizzard saying Je Ne say what? Even today, just the mention of his name elicits a smile and a story from my parents and their contemporaries.
So when I go to Sprayberry's (the original of course!), I have to order the Lewis Grizzard Special. This might be the closest I can get to a repeat the glory days of the Dawgs 1980 football national championship.
This meal should almost be standard at every BBQ restaurant within a 45 minute radius of the Atlanta Journal Constitution HQ. While the BBQ will not make your socks roll up and down, it is right down the center of the fairway. The food at Sprayberry's is the steady eddy of BBQ.
The pork is OK and is an old school "this is how we do it because this is how it is done." I prefer a more smoky flavor, but who I am to mess with what has been working since 1926? The sides outshine the pork. I am a fan of the vinegar slaw and the Brunswick Stew has a texture and consistency that is right on. Don't miss the O- Rings because they give the Varsity a run for their money.
If you live in Newnan, count yourself as a lucky dawg for having this gem just down the road. For the rest of us, we will just need to add an extra 45 minutes to our travel plans, so we can pull off on Exit 47 on I-85.
OVERALL: 🕷🕷🕷 (old school steady eddy)
Pork: 🐷 (swine is fine)
