Sky Light Inn Ayden, NC

I picked up my daughter from camp today and I was so excited to see her. She has been away for two weeks and I could not wait to hear all of her adventures. The cherry on top of this sundae was the fact that we were going to catch up over BBQ at Sky Light Inn in Ayden, NC.

Established in 1947, Sky Light has stayed true to its roots and is the standard for BBQ in these parts. Pulling into downtown Ayden, Waze steers me left and Pavlov might as well have starting ringing a bell. The cathedral temple appears in the distance and I ease into the gravel lot. Patience, Patience. It is 11am Friday morning and the line is starting to build.

As we walk in a rhythmic hammering meets us and a tough lookin' master carpenter with a handlebar mustache is behind the counter working the meat on a well worn wood block. Everything here just feels right. Whether it is Thor on the chopping block, the guys taking your order, the wafting smoke, the simplicity of the menu, or the plain interior; Sky Light draws you in and makes you feel like you are part of the family.

There is not much of a decision making process in this low frills establishment. Would you like the BBQ or the BBQ? The only real questions is how hungry are you..small, medium or large.

The slaw is the best that I have EVER had. Period. And the pork is perfectly smoked and is just lights out good. The cracklin' pieces just takes it to another level.

Did I really buy that hat? You are darn tooten I bought that hat. This place is so friggin good, how can you not buy that hat?

My company was as good as the BBQ. We laughed and joked and ate and ate. She was asleep in the car before we got outside of Ayden and I saved my styrofoam cup because I just like to remember this meal.
