Heirloom BBQ Atlanta, GA (Akers Mill Rd)
As Hannibal Lecter once said, "We begin by coveting what we see everyday." The lambs may have stopped screaming for Clarice, but the pigs are squealing for me everyday when I drive by Heirloom BBQ. My office is just up the street from this gifted BBQ shack and my general plan of attack is to drive by when I am heading to lunch and see what the parking lot looks like. If there is something that even remotely looks like a parking space, I pull in. This happens about as often as when pigs fly unless it is pouring down rain or freezing outside.
I long for this BBQ perhaps because it is oh so close, but oh so far away.
This week I lucked out because it was raining most of the week and I got to sneak in for a pork plate, not once, but twice! A little over the top I know and I am a little ashamed/embarrassed about it, but this is a rarity of availability for me. Sometimes, when you see the brass ring, you just have to grab it.
My first meal was a rock solid pork plate, stew and slaw. If I have to be picky, the stew is a little soupy but the flavor is right on with just the right amount of spice. Look at that pork below. Deeee-licious. The pork is perfect on it's own, but I always go with the one settler's sauce and one table sauce just for a little extra something something. I took this one back to my desk and had to cut my stapler out of the photo. Eating at the office is not exactly the thrill of the century, but the Q is good enough to enjoy even if you are sitting at your desk.
My second trip back to Heirloom this week was with my good buddy Dorf. He ordered the sausage sammy, and I could see him looking longingly at my pork plate.
There are no seats, so we ate standing at the build-in ledge on the patio. The rain had taken a breather and the stand-up eating is fine with one other person, but three is a crowd unless you are lucky enough to grab one of the few high tops.
I would be remiss not to mention the chili, which was on the menu over the winter, but I have not seen it lately. If it is on the menu order it. One of the best bowls of chili I have found in Atlanta.
