Did you ever watch the TV show Quantum Leap? I loved that show. Sam would jump through time trying to get back to the present. Every time he showed up in a new place and time period, he would solve some super problem and then move on. Sam rocked and I always thought it would be cool to travel through time. Apparently, all I had to do was jump on I-75 South and head to Dean's BBQ in Jonesboro, GA. The front screen door is like a time machine and.....voila Hello 1947.
This place is the definition of no frills and I love it - a couple of mandatory pig artifacts, a roll of paper towels on the table and just solid old school Q.
I made the mistake of hitting Deano's late in the day and they had run out of slaw, but the chopped pork was solid and the stew was on target. Although, I am not crazy about my pork coming smothered in sauce, Dean's sauce is thin and definitely not tomato-y. If the old timers like it like this, I am not going to buck the trend.
My wife a stew connoisseur herself inquired if there were Lima beans or potatoes in the stew. She got a hairy eye ball stare down in return. While the words uttered were "No", the meaning conveyed was "you got to be kidding me, no self respectin BBQ joint would put potatoes in stew." Well, we agree. The thought of potatoes in stew to me is like beans in chili to a Texan. Almost blasphemy. That is a long winded way of saying we really liked the stew. While my lady friend needed to spice it up a bit, I thought the flavor and consistency was right on and in keeping with the timeless no frills appeal of this institution.
